FAQs

How long and how often are sessions?

Sessions are held every week for 45 minutes. There is always an option to meet more frequently if that feels appropriate. In rare circumstances less than weekly sessions may be appropriate, but generally I find less frequent sessions to be not very useful. You are always welcome to discuss this in our sessions.

How long do I need to be in therapy?

This is a question I get asked a lot and there is no simple answer because it is different for everyone. Some people may only need a few sessions to work on a specific issue while others may attend for much longer.

Is there a cancellation policy?

In order to get the most out of therapy consistency is necessary. If you need to cancel for any reason please let me know at least 24 hours in advance. Otherwise the full cost of the session will be charged.

Do you offer a free phone consultation?

The relationship you have with your therapist is the most important aspect of whether psychotherapy is successful for you. Therefore, I offer a free 15 minute initial phone consultation where you will tell me a little bit about yourself and what you are looking for as well as ask any questions you have. This way we know that we are a good fit before you make any commitment.

Do you take insurance?

I am an out-of-network provider for insurance companies, which means that I do not bill insurance directly. If you have out-of-network benefits, you may be able to get reimbursed for some or all of the cost of the sessions. Please let me know if this is the case and I can send you monthly Superbills that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

I can’t afford to pay out of pocket, why don’t you accept insurance?

I recognize that psychotherapy can be costly and leaves many people unable to access treatment. However, dealing with insurance companies can often be a frustrating process, which can end up costing you more than you bargained for. When third-party payers are involved they can control much of what happens during the therapy process. First of all, insurance companies require a diagnosis to cover treatment and I do not believe everyone that seeks therapy has a diagnosable mental illness. Insurance companies also often get to determine how many sessions you get or refuse to cover sessions leading to gaps in treatment or forcing you to cover what they won’t. Through self-pay you know exactly how much you have to pay.

*You have the right to request a Good Faith Estimate of how much you can expect to spend on psychotherapy. Please contact me for more details.
